June Boxing Shows
June 21 - The show at PABA was postponed until September 6, due to difficulty finding a doctor.

June 28  Northshore Thunder Gloves show was hosted by Juan Moya and Irma Munoz was the largest show ever in the Gulf area – anyway in
the last forty years that I have been involved.  One hundred ninety one boxers from 45 boxing clubs weighed in to make 65 bouts.  The show
started at 2:30 PM and ended at 11:30 PM.  Fortunately there were 15 walkovers as some of the coaches for later bouts decided to go home.
Bout statistics were: 36 (3/0), 15 (2/1), 3 retirements and 1 RSC for a total of  50 bouts.  Thirteen of the clubs attending were from South Texas
LBC and Southern LBC’s.  Juan  Moya was expecting a large turnout and scheduled one doctor (Dr. Ike Ogbaa)to come in for 25 bouts and a
second doctor (Dr. Daniel Garcia) to come in for the final 25 bouts.  Officials that made it to the end were: Ricky Webb, Gary Simons, Cyndi
Alvarado, Bob McClendon and Rudy Justice.  The team trophy (most wins) went to Angel’s Boxing Club in San Antonio.

Coaches and Officials Certification Clinic
A coaches’ certification clinic will be held at the World Class Boxing gym in Pasadena, TX.  Clinicians will be Walt Hailey and Kenny Weldon.
Coaches that have not been certified in the past 2 years need to attend this clinic in order to work a boxers corner.
Kenny recently returned from London where he gave a coaches’ clinic.

An officials’ certification clinic will be held at the same time and place.  Ricky Webb will be the clinician.  Coaches are invited to attend the
officials clinic.

In Memory
Several current or past members of our boxing family have passed away in the past month and our condolences go out to their families.
Ceasar Cano- He was the current president of the South Texas Association and had held that position for over 20 years.  Ceasar was
instrumental in making the South Texas LBC one of the best in the United States.  He will be missed by amateur boxing.

John Cossin- John was an assistant coach at Ray’s boxing club and spent many hours in the gym working with the athletes.

Sammy O’Pry- Sammy was a top amateur boxer in the 80’s and he passed away after a long illness.

Boxing Show Guidelines
For a number of years the Gulf LBC has been fortunate to have great participation at our one night boxing shows.  Many of the clubs
competing come from neighboring LBC’s.
Our current guidelines are:
1) Coaches make the matches for their boxers and an official verifies that it is within the USA Boxing rules
2) Team rosters can be sent to host and distributed for coaches to make pre matches
3) The host decides how many bouts will be scheduled.  We feel that the show belongs to the host and we are there to help.
4) Teams from other LBC’s will be put at the top of the bout schedule.  They have to travel the farthest.  We want to encourage non-Gulf teams
to participate – if not we will be boxing the same boxers week after week.
These guidelines have been successful, but there is a downside and complaints from some areas.
Many officials and doctors feel that there should be a limit of 25 bouts.  The quality of officiating may deteriorate after four or five hours
Boxers having to wait for many hours before their bout are already tired when they box.
Some local coaches feel that non Gulf teams should not have an early bout priority.  They don’t receive any bout scheduling priority when they
go to other areas.
Any comments?
