4. Do we have a trainer or do we just go and hit the bags?
Actually, you won't be making ANY contact for the first couple of weeks. Someone will work with you everyday. We'll
get you going to start off and then check on you throughout the workout. EXAMPLE: We will have someone teach
you a basic boxing stance and how to throw the basic jab. You will work on this for a total of three rounds (each
round is 3 minutes with a one minute break) After the third round we will check and make sure you're doing it
correctly and then move on to the next punch. We will teach you the 2nd punch and allow you to work on that for 3
rounds as well. After the 3rd round (6th overall) we'll check on you and make sure you'll doing it correct. This cycle
repeats until you learn all your boxing basics. So you'll have a set training routine and someone will supervise you
EVERY DAY. Here at our gym you will never be working out alone and will not be ignored. If at anytime you feel you
are not getting the attention you deserve we ask that you let us know. We encourage questions/opinions at ALL
times. We, I (Arturo Ramos III - son) like to keep an open communication with our boxers at all times and will answer
any questions you may have. If you have complements I prefer you keep them. Compliments don't help us in anyway.
I actually prefer hearing complaints about me personally and the gym. Complaints MAKE US BETTER, compliments
don't.
5. How many days a week can we go to the gym?
We're open 6 days a week. Monday - Friday we start at 6pm and we also have some morning classes. If we see that
you're serious and dedicated we have no problem opening up the gym at an earlier time or a specific time in order to
work with you ONE on ONE. Don't be shy, just ask! . It varies on Saturdays. We usually get together on Friday after
the workout and agree on a time to meet here at the gym. You're welcome to come by 6 days a week.
6. Are you Golden Gloves?
Please don't ask this question unless you want to look like a total retard.
7. What if I just want to get in shape and don't want to box? Can I still go workout?
Yes. We have plenty of people here who come simply for the workout. Not everyone competes. Although you will not
be competing we will teach you like you were preparing to compete. We've been involved in the sport of boxing for
over 30 years and respect the sport. We expect you to as well. If we're going to allow someone to train here at our
gym we will teach them the proper way to box.
8. Is this just a boxing gym or do you have other things?
It's ONLY a boxing gym. Nothing else. We have had MMA fighters come train here to improve on their boxing but we
don't teach MMA. Our gym is a boxing gym. Nothing else.
9. When is there competition?
Boxing is a year round sport. It's not a seasonal sport. There's boxing shows/tournaments every Saturday. We also
travel around the country to compete. One of the tournaments we attend every year is the Ringside World
Championship tournament. That takes place in Kansas City, MO. We also travel around the state to compete against
other boxing teams.
10. Do I have to buy any equipment?
No. We have everything here. The only thing you will need to buy once you start punching bag are handwraps.(&
mouthpiece if you decide to spar or compete) They usually cost about 5 dollars. That's the only thing you'll ever need
to purchase. When we travel we usually have fundraisers in order to help with expenses. So your membership fee
covers everything.
11. How much does it cost to start?
You can see details about pricing here. No sign up fees or contracts.. You pay monthly. If you decide it's not for you
you're not obligated to continue paying. The reason most Karate schools require sign up, competition, test fees &
contracts is cause karate is basically about the money. Nothing else. All income karate schools make is TAX FREE.
They pay no taxes.
12. Is there any other fees I'll have to pay?
Other than the membership the only other fee you will need pay is if you decide to compete. If you decide to travel
with the team and compete you will be required to pay 55.00 per year. This fee goes directly to USA BOXING in
Colorado Springs, CO. This registers you with USABOXING and insures you in case you get hurt during competition
or while training.
13. How many coaches is there?
We have coaches that work with the "rookies" and others who work with the boxers who compete. When any of the
"rookies" advance to the bag they will start working with the same coaches that work with those who compete. Even if
you're not planning to compete and are just training you will still be able to work with them.
14. Who are the coaches?
Some of the coaches are former amateur and professional boxers. Most of the coaches here have worked under a
training program designed by coaches who competed at the highest level possible in the amateur ranks. They have
been on teams and in training camps with former Olympians and current World Champions (Floyd Mayweather,
Diego Corrales, Antonio Tarver, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar Dela Hoya, Arturo Gatti, Raushee Warren to name a few)
These same coaches have also boxed as professionals.
15. Can we just go watch?
Yes. Anyone can stop by and simply sit in to watch our boxers in action. Our boxers spar every Tuesday & Thursday.
On Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday we do different conditioning, agility, ploymetric, strength and
improvement drills.
1. What ages do you accept?
Age doesn't matter. Our youngest has
been 4, oldest has been in the mid
60's. Most gyms don't allow children
under the age of 8 to workout. Here we
do. Their attention span is short but
one of the reasons we allow children of
that age to "workout" is because part of
boxing is being comfortable around
your surroundings. The more a child is
around this atmosphere the better they
will perform once they're old enough to
compete. Currently (2011-2012) we
have the #3 ranked boxer in the
country. He is 17 now and has over 120
bouts. He started here with us at the
age of 7.
2. Do you accept females?
Of course. Boxing is for both male and
female. We have both, amateur and
professional female boxers. Even a few
fruitcakes! JK We don't discriminate. If
you want to learn how to box, we are
here for you!
3. I've never boxed before. Is
this gym for beginners?
Although experienced boxers are
welcome we actually prefer beginners.
If we decide to work with experienced
boxers they must meet the head coach
first and go over a few things. We don't
train opponents. We take pride in our
gym and will not allow anyone to step
into the ring if we don't feel they can
win. If you're a veteran boxer and are
simply looking for a paycheck, this gym
is NOT for you. There's plenty of gyms
around town that will work with you
though. Beginners are a lot easier to
teach. They don't bring any bad boxing
habits from other gyms with them.
