Ramos drops close decision in
finals!

Hector Ramos at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this past weekend had to settle for Silver at the Pan-
Am trials. Ramos advanced to the finals with decision over Texan, David De La Cruz. The finals was a match-up of last
year's US Championships finals, Ramos vs Dargan. All finalist will remain in training camp until Feb. 1 as alternates.

THE 2007 PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM IS SET AT THE 2007 PAN AM BOX-OFFS
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Nine intense bouts in final round action at the 2007 Pan Am Box-offs determined the 2007
Pan American Games team on Sunday at the One Springs Boxing Program gym in Colorado Springs, Colo.
With Olympic trials only eight months away, the Pan Am Box-offs provided an early look at the boxers who will be competing for
a 2008 Olympic Games berth. The winners from Sunday’s action will take part in a preparatory training camp at the Olympic
Training through January 31 before departing for Caracas, Venezuela and the first Pan American Games international qualifier
In another rematch, light welterweights Karl Dargan (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Hector Ramos (San Antonio, Texas) faced off in a U.
S. Championships final round sequel. Dargan took a commanding 7-1 lead after the first round, but Ramos flew back to within
one point after two rounds before grabbing a 9-8 lead as the final round began. Dargan took the lead back in the final round, but
after he had a second point taken in the fourth, the score was tied up. The bout went into the final minute with the result in doubt,
but Dargan took the lead for good, winning a 15-13 decision to win his second straight Pan American Games berth

Light welterweight Karl Dargan (Philadelphia, Pa.) returned to “Dynamite” form in his bout with Ray Rivera (Kansas City, Mo.).
Dargan took control in the opening seconds, giving Rivera a standing eight count en route to an 11-2 lead after the first round. The
trend continued into the second round as Dargan continued throwing strong, quick punches before the referee called a halt to the
bout at the 1:11 mark of the second. Dargan will face off in a U.S. Championships final round rematch with Hector Ramos (San
Antonio, Texas). Ramos faced off with fellow Texan David de la Cruz (Grand Prairie, Texas) in the second light welterweight
bout. Ramos moved out to an early 6-0 lead after the first round but De la Cruz came flying back in the second, pulling to within
two points. Ramos took a two-point lead into the fourth round as well, and built on his advantage to win a 16-9 final decision.
Ramos & Castillo advance to next
round!
Feb.21, 2007 - San Antonio, TX.
Hector Ramos & Adam Castillo both opened up last night's Golden Glove tournament with wins. Adam literally started
off the night. He was scheduled as the first bout of the night at the new renovated Woodlawn Gym.
Adam Castillo vs Rosey Summerville of Fairbanks, AK. Adam set the pace early using his footwork and his left
handed style to confuse Summerville. The bout remained closed through 3 rounds but Castillo pulled away in the last
round with strong straight lefts that were easy to score on the judges cards.
Adam is set to take on Daniel Gonzales of Angels Boxing Club on Wed.
Hector Ramos vs Paul Rangel, San Antonio - Scholar Warrior Boxing Club. Hector proved to have a bit to much
firepower for the valiant Rangel. Referee stopped the contest .40 seconds into the first round.
Hector will take on James Cantu of Angels Boxing Club on Wed. The winner of this bout will advance to the finals.

The following boxers have been registered and are available for competition.
Being registered and available to compete doesn't necessarily mean they will. Some of the "boxers" below might never
actually compete. As a formality it is best to have boxers registered and have them covered by USA Boxing's insurance
in case of "an accident" at the gym.
In other words, DON'T call yourself a boxer just cause you're registered. You must earn this right.

Polson, Castillo & Martinez advance to
Golden Gloves finals! Cantu upsets Ramos!
Feb. 22, 2007
Billy Polson scored a 5-0 decision over Moses Perez of SAPR. He advances to the finals vs defending GG Novice
Champion, Todd Tabooz, ROCK Boxing Gym - Austin, TX.
Jairo Martinez will meet up with Armando Cardenas of Angels Boxing Club in Saturdays finals.
Feb.21, 2007
Castillo & Ramos were both in action once again on the 2nd night of our Regional Golden Gloves. Both were in bouts
vs boxers from Angels Boxing Club.
Adam Castillo vs Daniel Gonzales – Angels, San Antonio. Castillo was looking to score his 3rd victory in 5 days,
and he did. Castillo once again waited until the final round to pull away and score a 4-1 decision over the towering
Gonzales. Gonzales boxed from the outside the first three rounds and kept it close, until the final round. Castillo scored
12 points in the final round on one judges scorecard, enough to give him the victory and advance to the finals against
Gabriel Hernandez of New Braunfels.
Hector Ramos vs James Cantu, Angels, San Antonio – The most anticipated bout of the night lived up to it’s
expectations. A young boxer coming up matched against the veteran. It could have been called the passing of the torch,
but it’s exactly what it wasn’t. Despite two warnings Cantu did enough to score a 3-2 split decision. Cantu advances to
the finals against
Marus Hall of SAPR.

Castillo & Polson score wins at
USAF Box-Offs!
Feb.18, 2007 - San Antonio, Tx.
Lightweight Adam Castillo and Heavyweight Billy Polson both scored much needed wins at this years USAF Box-Offs.
Adam Castillo will be in action once again Tuesday at this years Golden Gloves. He is scheduled to meet Rosey
Summerville of Fairbanks, AK. Billy Polson along with Hector Ramos, Jairo Martinez, Erika Pacheco and Celina
Salazar will also be competing later this week in the tournament.
Adam Castillo vs Eugene Marquez, Barragada, Guam. (USAF) Castillo in a lackluster effort did enough to win the
bout. After a slow start in the first two rounds Castillo picked up the pace and hurt Marquez midway through the round
but was unable to finish him off.
Billy Polson vs James Sterrling, Madison WI. Kadena AFB Japan. Polson showed some MAJOR improvements
in his first fight back since a disappointing loss at last years LBC tournament. His defense was flawless over 3 rounds.
Add a mediocre offense with a great defense and you'll get a win 99% of the time.
Martinez advances to State Tournament!
Feb. 25, 2006
Jairo Martinez will be the 125lb San Antonio representative at the Golden Gloves State Tournament in Ft. Worth, Tx this
coming week. Martinez is scheduled to depart Tuesday.
Adam Castillo's quest to claim the 132lb division title came to an end Saturday. After successfully defeating boxers, 26,
24 & 23 years old earlier this week he came up short against Jose Hernandez (27yrs) of San Marcos. Adam Castillo is
17yrs old.
CHAMPIONSHIP - 125lb OPEN DIVISION
Jairo Martinez vs Armando Cardenas - Angels Boxing Club, San Antonio. With the physical advantages of a
middleweight the 6'3 Cardenas decided to give the fans a crowd pleasing slugfest. This played right into Jairo's game plan
of applying pressure and non stop punching. The bout remained even throughout the first two round with each boxer
having their moments. But it was Jairo who picked up the pace in the final two rounds eventually scoring at will with clean
shots..
CHAMPIONSHP - 132lb OPEN DIVISION
Adam Castillo vs Jose Hernandez - San Marcos, TX.. What seemed like a physical mismatch turned out to be a close
technical bout. Castillo stayed on the outside often counter-punching the stronger Hernandez. There wasn't much action
until the later part of the bout. Hernadez got the better of Castillo on a few exchanges in the middle of the ring that
allowed him to pick up the victory and the trip to Ft. Worth.
CHAMPIONSHIP - 201lb NOVICE DIVISION
Billy Polson vs Todd Tabboz, Round Rock, TX. This was a VERY difficult bout the score. Not many clean punches
out of both boxers as they both showed respect for each others punching power. This was Todd's 2nd GG regional title.
CHAMPIONSHIP - 125lb FEMALE OPEN DIVISION
Celina Salazar - unoppossed champion
CHAMPIONSHIP - 132ld FEMALE SUB-NOVICE
Erika Pacheco - unopossed champion
.
Boxers not so Golden at State
Tournament!
March 6, 2007
Jairo Martinez quest to become a state champion came to an end Friday in the semi-finals of the GG State Tournament.
Martinez recorded an impressive decision victory over local favorite Demetrius Hunter of Ft. Worth to advance to the
semi-finals. It was then where Martinez ran into 2005 JO National Silver-Medalist Jose Jimenez of Corpus Christi dropping a
5-0 decision. Martinez has showed great poise and determination over the last couple of months. He's showed great attitude and
persona in some difficult situations. I wish the same could be said about some of our officials.
.
San Antonio had a poor showing at this years State Golden Gloves tournament. Not one boxer from SA won a state title this
year. Not sending a boxer to the National Golden Glove tournament is a slap in the face to our city. It's a reflection of the
program at the local level. How can we have a successful program if we're not sending the best boxers forward? It's like
sending the High School ROTC students to fight our war in Iraq.
It was obvious to many coaches that some of the decisions made at the local level were biased. Including inducting a alcoholic
into the SAGG Coaches Hall of Fame. Being a heavy drinker is ones business but it becomes everyone's business when these
same drunk coaches are allowed to coach/work the corner.
Our association is full of very good boxers that can be successful at the national and international level. There's no reason why
we shouldn't have boxers representing our city at the national level.
We all expect our children & students to make responsible decisions and the same should be expected from our officials &
coaches.
"Either we can work together to fulfill our mission
or we can continue to witness the collapse of our
organization."
March 7, 2007
This is the message from Colorado Springs, CO. Looks like it's not just our LBC that has problems. It will
be interesting to see what comes out of this. The USAB recently lost all funding from A2P. That's over 1
million dollars in revenue that they were depending on to fund some international trips and cover cost of our
insurance. Without these funds and the way things are being handled by our "new" BOD things don't look
good.

No answers as to how to fix USA Boxing
By Alan Abrahamson
NBCSports.comPosted: Mar.21, 2007, 1:58 pm EDT
To recite USA Boxing's organizational woes is to wonder how it can get out of the jam it's so obviously in.
The United States Olympic Committee put USA Boxing on probation in 2002; last April, USA Boxing was
asked to undergo extensive governance reform. The new board met for the first time in October. The
federation is still without an executive director; John Stavros, who was one of the five members of Martin's
nominating committee, has been serving since last year as interim director.
The federation's 2007 budget: $3 million, not enough for a sport in which insurance, gear and even travel
allowances for fighters, especially those from lower economic levels, remain consistent challenges.
"We have to figure out over the next year how to bring an additional $2 million into the organization," Virgets
said.
Andy Geiger, the former athletic director at Ohio State, was among those named to the new board. Already,
though, he and another of the new directors, businessman Robert Blaha of Colorado Springs, Colo., are
weighing resignation, Virgets confirmed. Blaha could not be reached for comment.
Geiger said, "The problems of discipline, of organization … it seems almost impossible to me."
Another new director, Alan Rothenberg, one of the leading figures in international sports in the United States,
a Los Angeles-based lawyer and banker who oversaw the 1994 World Cup, called the episode in Stockton
"Exhibit A" of much that needs to be addressed in overhauling Olympic boxing in the United States.
USA Boxing's mission statement explicitly demands that the organization, in partnership with the "local boxing
committees," 56 volunteer-run organizations scattered around the country, "develop character."
That's a key goal in trying to "promote and grow the sport."
Asked what it's going to take to fix things, Rothenberg said, "I wish I could answer."
Once, the U.S. Olympic team was the hallmark of American boxing greats: Cassius Clay (1960), Joe Frazier
(1964), George Foreman (1968), Leon and Michael Spinks and Ray Leonard (1976), Evander Holyfield
(1984), Roy Jones Jr. (1988).
At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, of the 38 fights involving U.S. boxers that went the full three rounds,
37 went to the Americans -- evidence of across-the-board depth on the U.S. team.
Topless ring girls just one sign of USA
Boxing decline
By Alan Abrahamson
NBCSports.com
Posted: Mar.21, 2007, 1:55 pm EDTGonzalo Riquielme is 15 years old, a sophomore in high school with an
avid interest in boxing. That's why he was in attendance March 1 at an Olympic-style boxing event in
Stockton, Calif., east of San Francisco, when the ring girls went topless.
"They said, 'Stay behind the curtains,'" Gonzalo said. "We heard an 'ooh.' That's when a naked woman came
out." He stopped and corrected himself as he reviewed in his mind the image of a woman jiggling around the
ring between rounds: "She wasn't naked. She had her top off."
Later that evening, Gonzalo told his mother what had transpired: "She was, like, wow -- shocked."
Olympic-style boxing in the United States has for years been shadowed by organizational uncertainties. It has
been plagued by financial difficulties. It has endured links to officials convicted of crimes.
Now, with the 2008 Beijing Olympics fewer than 18 months away, the prospect for medals once again
uncertain in a sport in which the United States used to shine, amateur boxing in this country is perhaps at its
ebb, the event March 1 in Stockton dramatic evidence of the lack of institutional control that threatens the
dreams of would-be U.S. Olympic athletes.
The Stockton event also prompts questions about accountability for what transpired that night. Staged on city
property, the Civic Auditorium, it was an invitation-only, black-tie function intended to raise funds for charity
and initiated by a businessman's group, the Downtown Sportsmen's Club.
