Fundraiser a success!
Sept. 24, 2006

With only seven weeks between national tournaments (Ringside in Kansas City, Mo. & PAL in
Oxnard, Calif.) our team was running against time to raise money to cover the cost of travel to
Oxnard. Grandma Corajes brought a great idea to the table. Applebee's sponsored breakfast!
With our boxers serving as waiters the cost was minimal.

Thanks to all the help from our volunteers; we'll be traveling to California with enough money to
add cheese to our sandwiches. A balance sheet showing our profit will be posted at the gym
Monday.

Traveling to Oxnard, Calif.: Christian Santibanes, Cresencio Ramos Jr. Cresencio Ramos Sr.,
Jairo Martinez, Celina Salazar, Mr. Salazar (dad), Hector Ramos & Arturo Ramos III.

USABoxing hands over control to the United States Olympic Committee!
August 21, 2006

An "emergency meeting" was held this past Saturday in Chicago, IL. The subject was simple, vote yes for
the new proposal by the United States Olympic Committee and USABoxing continues; vote no, and it will
no longer by considered the governing body by the USOC. USABoxing was on the verge of being
decertified by the USOC. This meant it would no longer be considered part of the United States Olympic
Committee. In other words, no more amateur boxing. According to Jay Warwick (Director of Sports for the
USOC) the decertification process would begin today, Monday August 19. He also mentioned the
Committee was in the final stages of decertifying team hand-ball, which meant they would no longer
receive funds from the USOC. It's simple, without the help of the USOC amateur sports struggle.

The new proposal gives the USOC control of the way our "business" is managed. What they do with the
funds is up to them; we have no say so.  Their funds, their business. The reason for this is pretty simple.
Our sport has gone through 10 CEOs in the past 8 years. Not considered good for ANY business. These
clowns (USABoxing) Board of Directors also managed  to "MISUSE" over 3 million dollars, 1.6 of which
had to be paid back to the USOC. THESE FACTS are hard to argue against. It was pretty upsetting. These
"men" jeopardized our sport, amateur boxing. Voting for this new proposal means less power to all LBCs
and our Board of Directors.

Many people believed this was BS that there was no way USABoxing could be decertified. I was glad to
have attended this meeting. I felt the same way, I couldn't believe they'd do this to our boxers. After
attending the meeting and hearing it from a representative of the United States Olympic Committee,
"Decertification process will being Monday.", Jay Warwick, it became reality. Our club insurance, boxers
insurance and future boxing shows were in jeopardy.

Early this year my brother, Hector Ramos, was at the Olympic Training Center getting ready to compete in
Cuba. After the first week the trip was canceled and all boxers were sent back to their hometowns,
disappointed. Their excuse, "not enough time to get visas for everyone". The TRUTH: NO MONEY! This
incident was mentioned at the meeting.

After hearing both sides 131 LBC representatives voted:

FOR = 87
AGAINST = 42
(Yes, I know 2 votes are missing. They were probably in the crapper, I dunno. This was the count)

Due to our large membership our LBC receives 3 votes (most LBCs receive only 1). Representing South
Texas at this meeting were, Joseph & Virginia Souza and Arturo Ramos III. So while most of you were at
the Calderon show competing; amateur boxing was receiving it's own  8 count.

I think we've beat the count, we'll see.

This means USABOXING continues, but not on our terms.

Santibanes wins first title, Guajardo repeats!
August 7, 2006

Christian Santibanes and Eric Guajardo both scored victories Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri at the finals of the 2006
Ringside World Championship tournament. Santibanes needed three wins during the week to pick up the National
Championship while Eric needed just one during the week long tournament.

Cresencio Ramos & Jario Martinez came up a bit short in their quest while Celina Salazar lost in the finals of the Under –
19 Championships to #3 ranked female in the nation, Katy Klinefelter of Iowa City, Iowa.

Christian Santibanes vs Angelo Leo, Albuquerque, NM.  As these two boxers sized up in the middle of the ring before the
bout it looked like a mismatch. Leo towered the shorter, smaller Santibanes. None of this would matter going into the final
round during this close bout. Knowing the bout would be decided in the final round Santibanes came out swinging from
the sound of the bell. His sharp one-twos and “elbows high” defense allowed him to pick up the close 2-1 decsion.

Christian Santibanes vs Lynard Estrada, Ft. Worth, Texas. (Semi-Finals) Different night, same story. Estrada came out
aggressive during the first round muscling Santibanes around , but not scoring much due to Santibanes’ tight defense. A
strong final round by Santibanes allowed him to pick up his 2nd 2-1 decision.

Christian Santibanes vs Demetrius Johnson, St. Louis. (FINALS) This evenly matched bout would AGAIN be decided in
the final round. The first two rounds were pretty even with both boxers having their moments in each round. “You NEED a
big 3rd round to win the bout”, was motivation enough for Santibanes as he came out with sharp combinations to begin
the final round. In the end Christian would score the 2-1 decision to claim his first National Title.

Eric Guajardo vs James Singleton, Bonne Terre, Mo. (FINALS) With only one boxer in his
weight/age division (11-12, 132lbs) Guajardo was not about to let anyone prevent him from claiming
his 2nd straight National Title. Eric knew he'd have to work hard to earn this win. His finals bout was
against James Singleton, a veteran of over 40 bouts. Eric had the physical advantage (Eric is 5'11, James
was about 5'5) so the game plan was easy, HIT&RUN. Throughout three rounds a determined James
did not take a single step back. Despite a reach disadvantage it did not prevent James from making an interesting fight. It
was obvious James worked extremely hard in the gym and it showed as he punched
and applied pressure for all three rounds. But in the end it was Eric who'd score a points victory over
James to claim his 2nd straight National Title.

Celina Salazar vs Katy Kleinfelter, Iowa City, Iowa. If there was ever any doubt whether Celina
belongs among boxing’s elite this bout should erase any doubt, including Celinas’. The #3 ranked boxer
in the nation found out early in the bout she’d have to work hard to earn the victory. In only her 10th bout Salazar gave Katy
all she could handle. In her first open bout Celina came up 7 points short of scoring the upset. Click link to view  Katy's bio
Katy Klienfelter's BIO

Cresencio Ramos vs Benaiah Lynn, Tulsa, Oklahoma. This bout was ugly. Ramos was forced to exchange punches with
the running back style of Lynn. Head down, shoulder squared running forward was Lynn’s game-plan, and it almost
worked. The quick thinking Ramos planted his feet and beat Lynn at his
own game. Ramos claimed the win.

Cresencio Ramos vs Destyne Butler, Chicago, IL. In my years of coaching this is only the 2nd time
I've felt like punching a ref or two. I'll NEVER understand this decision. Instead of trying to explain what
happened I'll just post a video of the fight on here. As soon as i can get it on MP3 format it will be posted. Although this was
a close fight (by the judges scorecards) 11-9 & 9-8 Butler & 8-7 for Ramos I can't
seem to decipher the outcome. I'll let you be the judge.

Jairo Martinez vs Robert Rodriguez, Evans, Co. Jairo couldn't have drawn a tougher opponent in his bracket. With 25
boxers in his bracket Jairo knew he'd have to work hard to earn a National title. Jairo
drew the toughest opponent in his bracket, Robert Rodriguez. A 3 time national champion and recent medalist at the
Cadet games in Russia. In only his 20th bout Martinez game Rodriguez all he could handle. Rodriguez was forced to use
his hit&run style vs the aggressive Martinez. Rodriguez fought smart and won
a decision.

Martinez loses decision in
"Mosquito, Texas"!
June 11, 2006

It's official, Alvin, Texas' mosquito population is higher than it's human population. They were everywhere!
In other news; Jairo Martinez's late rally in the JO State finals was not enough to overcome Adam Ochoa's
slapfest.

Saturday - June 10, 2006
Jairo Martinez vs Rene Rivera - Gulf (Houston) This was definitely an OFF day for Martinez. His legs
looked shaky, his punches were sloppy, and his stamina was back in the hotel watching TV in the A/C.
This bout was won on pure determination. Martinez overcame Rivera's aggressiveness and pounded out a
hard earned 3-2 decision to advance to the State finals.

Sunday - June 11, 2006
Jairo Martinez vs Adam Ochoa - West Texas (El Paso) After watching Ochoa overpower his two
previous opponents we knew we were in for a tough fight. We were right. Jairo found out early in the first
round he'd have to find a way to overcome Ochoa's power-punching. Having witnessed Ochoa score
knockdowns in his previous fights Jairo's game-plan was simple; don't get hit! Easier said than done.
Ochoa landed a solid left hook late in the first round that had Martinez on the seat of his pants. Up by the
count of six Martinez returned to the corner a bit surprised. Ochoa came out in the 2nd round hoping to end
the night early. Martinez withstood the power punching and made a late rally in the round himself. Going
into the final round Martinez knew he'd have to make up for the slow first round to win the bout. Both boxers
traded punches for the first half of the round. By the end of the bout Ochoa found himself in an odd position;
with his back on the ropes. Jairo scored the cleaner shots but the lead was out of reach. Ochoa won a 5-0
decision to claim the State Title and earn a trip to the National Tournament in Marquette, Mich.

Two of the five judges scored the bout 31-28.

The 119lb division was one of the few weight classes that was represented by all Texas LBC Associations.

West Texas - Adam Ochoa        South West Texas - Joshua Martinez        South Texas - Jairo Martinez
Gulf - Rene Rivera                     Border - Oscar Valenzuela
Martinez pounds
Columbian!
Sept. 28, 2006 - San Antonio, Texas

It was evident that there would be fireworks in this FIGHT. On paper it was a
matchmakers/crowds dream bout; 49 combined wins among them, with 41 ko's!

Ilido Julio (33-9-1-29KOS) & Raul Martinez (15-0 12KOS) didn't waste any time as both
boxers hit the canvas early in the bout. Martinez remained disciplined throughout the bout and
punished the heavier foe. A large gash courtesy of a accidental headbutt had Martinez
dripping in blood going into the later part of the fight. Blood, which has always been the best
motivator for Raul was winning the bout easily on all of the judges cards going into the 10th
and final round. Most boxers, when facing a boxer with such a high KO percentage would be
satisfied getting an unanimous decision, not Raul. Martinez decided to throw caution to the
wind and went for the KO! Julio had no answer for Raul's punching power as he laid on the
ropes helplessly. Referee Ruben Carrion had no choice but the step in and save the brave
pugilist from Colombia.
